about

From the album: Gifts and Testaments of Robin Hood Road

Though my original intended dedication for this song was to my brothers, the song became as much about the plight of our family in the years following the divorce of my parents as it is homage to Brent and David. I penned the music for this song in the spring of 1984. It was my full intention then to make the song a tribute to my brothers but lyrics eluded me for more than a decade. In late January 1998 following Brent’s annual birthday dinner, I found the inspiration that had eluded me for fourteen years. The title is rich. Its inspiration was two fold. As children, I fondly remember my brothers as blond ponies running carefree and happy despite the obstacles we overcame and despite having to contend with me as a typical older brother. As adults, we discovered one of our favorite wines carries the same name: Cheval Blanc (horse white). -Jon Charles Fortman

lyrics

"White Horses"

by Jon Charles Fortman

(verse 1)
Born in a sun that shone
On a vine that lay near Libournais

Pour...pour the ‘64
Aged as sweet as your every year

(chorus)
White horses at full stride
Southern beach at low tide
We knew Lee as antebellum
But the joy became seldom

A pilgrimage to heritage
A land of lagniappe trois couleur fete
A chance to revel in all we stood for
And loved...

In the wake of our tears
We found a way to amend
All we could hear
Voices of friends we knew dear

In all our years
For want of one moment long
To hold and endear
Your heart your love your song

(verse 2)
Dance on the frozen sand
Make a song with your golden hand

Play in a summer's day
On a diamond throne
And from third I'll wave you Home
